Welcome to the Huntsville Kennel Club! |
Who We Are: The Huntsville Kennel Club is a non-profit organization established by local dog fanciers in 1960. The membership is primarily comprised of people who own and show purebred dogs. Our members come from all walks of life and represent a wide variety of breeds. Many club members are actively involved in American Kennel Club (AKC) conformation competition. Other members have their faithful dog at home and belong to the club to learn more about dogs and for the camaraderie among our members. What Is Conformation? The official term for dog shows is conformation, as in, the act of conforming or producing conformity. While a dog show may look like a beauty pageant, it is not. Dogs are not being compared to each other; they are being measured by how closely they conform to the standard of their particular breed. Why? Because the closer a dogs appearance is to the breeds standard, the better that dogs ability will be to produce puppies that meet the standard. It is also the reason why mixed breeds and spayed or neutered purebreds are ineligible to compete in conformation. |
